These policies have negative effects on LGBTQ+ students and make them even more vulnerable to harassment and discrimination. What's more, they are illegal.
In New Jersey, we are lucky to have a state government that has the LGBTQ+ community's back. For example, the state Attorney General has already filed civil rights complaints against four school districts over policies forcing schools to out students to their parents. But by the time the district is taken to court, the damage has already been done: LGBTQ+ students already know that adults in positions of authority over their education think they don't matter as much as their peers.
