Urge Your Representative and Senators to Cosponsor a Resolution in Support of Arms Control

Support arms control by urging your Representative and Senators to champion nuclear risk reduction today!

Council-backed Rep. Bill Foster and long-time Council endorsees Sen. Ed Markey and Sen. Jeff Merkley have introduced a resolution to support nuclear arms control in these perilous times. Right now, they need their colleagues to hear from you as you urge your Representative and Senators to cosponsor this critical legislation.

This resolution supports arms control, which is the primary means by which the global nuclear arsenal has gone from 70,000 at its peak to less than 13,000 today. Those reductions didn't come from threats of annihilation; they came from decades of diplomacy led by presidents of both major parties. This is an incredible feat, but there is still more work to be done.

This resolution also:

• condemns Russia's escalatory nuclear rhetoric and veiled threats to use nuclear weapons during its war in Ukraine;

• condemns Russia's purported suspension of the New START agreement, which effectively limited the world's two biggest nuclear nations, helping prevent the arms race none of us want;

• calls for Russia to promptly return to full implementation of New START so we may once again be granted the unparalleled access to Russia's nuclear information that the treaty provided;

• calls on the Biden administration to continue to engage China in further bilateral talks on nuclear risk reduction and arms control, and to pursue new multilateral arms control efforts involving the five permanent members of the UN Security Council; and

• calls on the Biden administration to continue to pursue nuclear arms control and risk reduction dialogue with Russia to maintain strategic stability, ensure the conflict in Ukraine does not escalate to nuclear use, and avoid an unrestrained nuclear arms race.

No one wants a new nuclear arms race and we should all support nuclear arms control efforts like the New START agreement. Our children and grandchildren deserve to live in a world without nuclear threats.
