The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released its final decision to roundup and remove all the wild burros in the Centennial, Panamint, and Slate Herd Areas (HAs) in California.
The HAs are made up of roughly 1.73 million acres of public and private land and are currently home to roughly 1,000 wild burros. The BLM changed the Appropriate Management Level (AML) for the burros in these HAs to 0, even though they call this area home. The decision to set the AML at 0 was made in the 1980s and the BLM has refused to review this decision roughly 40 years later.
Now the agency is planning to roundup and remove almost 1,000 wild burros, over ten years, in order to achieve the 0 AML. The initial effort will start with the Centennial HA utilizing helicopter-assisted roundup for the removal of 300 burros with an anticipated start date of May 28, 2021.
