Commercial shooters kill some two million wild kangaroos a year in their native Australian habitat, making Kangaroos victims of the largest commercial slaughter of land-based wildlife in the world. The skins are then used to make shoes and other leather goods that are sold by major companies around the globe and within the United States.
Major manufacturers are still purchasing kangaroo products to produce goods even though they already sell dozens of models of soccer cleats that do not rely on kangaroo skins. These companies have touted their sustainability goals and commitment to the environment, yet are still driving this massive commercial kill for shoes that can readily be made from alternative fabrics.
The Kangaroo Protection Act would close off one of the world's biggest markets for kangaroo parts and go a long way to stopping the slaughter in the Outback.
It would also go a long way in convincing Nike, adidas, and other athletic shoemakers to purge their supply chain of the skins of kangaroos.
