There is consensus among climate scientists that climate change is real, it is happening now, and its impacts will be severe. According to the University of Nebraska's 2014 report on the implications of climate change for Nebraska, the "debate is restricted to precisely how these changes will play out and what actions we will need to take to adapt to and mitigate the effects of these changes...Action now is preferable and more cost effective than reaction later."
LB483 would create an action plan for the state of Nebraska to deal with climate change. This action plan is long overdue and necessary for the future prosperity of Nebraskans. Currently, 33 other states recognize the need to plan ahead, and have climate action plans, including our neighboring states of Colorado and Iowa. Additionally, more than 60% of rural Nebraskans think that our state should develop such a plan. LB483 would help our state be prepared not only to manage risks but to take advantage of opportunities.
LB576 would update Nebraska's Climate Change Assessment. The last Nebraska Climate Change Assessment was done in 2014 - seven years ago. A lot has happened in the last seven years. We have more data, more research from across the world, and more extreme weather events have occurred. An updated report can better inform us on how we are already being impacted by climate change and help us develop a plan to take action.
