In Maine, it doesn't matter how much money we make or where we live — we all believe in fairness. It is not fair that while big oil corporations raked in billions and our electric utilities made over $200 million in profit[1] in 2023, they sent out more than 440,000 disconnection notices[2] to Maine households. These are our parents, our children, our neighbors, our friends. Corporate profits, costly storms fueled by climate change, and expensive and polluting fossil fuels are standing in the way of basic needs.
That is why I support the Energy Fairness Act. This bill is about making a system that is fairer for everyone. It will save Maine families money, while protecting vulnerable customers from disconnections, demand accountability and transparency, improve standards for the workers we all rely on, and facilitate the transition to 100% clean electricity.
