Add Comprehensive Oral Health to Medicare Part B

Medicare’s lack of oral health coverage leaves millions of older Americans and those with disabilities without access to preventive care and treatment necessary to live a healthy, full life.

Strengthening Medicare by adding dental coverage to Part B will not only help close a significant gap in care — it also makes long-term financial sense. Studies regularly show that access to routine oral health care reduces medical costs, especially for those with chronic illnesses like diabetes and heart disease.

The lack of dental coverage in Medicare Part B disproportionately impacts historically marginalized communities. In fact, in the last year, 7 out of 10 Black Medicare beneficiaries and 6 out of 10 Hispanic Medicare beneficiaries did not see a dentist, and 20% of rural seniors have not seen a dentist in more than five years.

In a recent Morning Consult/Politico poll, 84 percent of surveyed U.S. voters (89% of Democrats and 79% of Republicans) supported adding dental, vision and hearing coverage to Medicare.

As the budget reconciliation process moves forward, I urge you to act to include comprehensive dental coverage for ALL Medicare beneficiaries through Part B.
