The Southeast is home to some of the biggest utility systems in the nation: Duke Energy, Southern Company, NextEra, and the Tennessee Valley Authority. But the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy's (SACE) recent analysis has found that not a single one of these utilities is on track to be carbon-free by 2035, or even 2050. However, a Clean Electricity Standard (CES), which could be implemented as a Clean Electricity Payment Program (CEPP), would change that trajectory and direct the nation's power sector to be carbon-free by 2035. To avert the worst impacts of climate change, we must slash greenhouse gas emissions and rapidly decarbonize our power sector. A CES implemented through a CEPP, will help us get to a 100% carbon-free electric grid by 2035, with an interim goal of an 80% carbon-free electric grid by 2030, and serve as the cornerstone for our broader clean energy transformation that could create millions of well-paying jobs, improve public health, and reduce bills. It can also be a tool to lift up frontline communities who are already being impacted by the climate crisis and help to right historical injustices. Take action TODAY and send a customizable letter urging your elected leaders to support 100% clean electricity by 2035.
