Share Food Program
Community Farming Day

Thanks so much for your help in the fight against food insecurity in Philadelphia!

Nice Roots Farm and Orchard hosts Community Farming days, a series of monthly work days taking place monthly from March to December.

What's the opportunity?

Participants will learn about growing food in an urban environment, make an impact with hands-on help, and get to know others looking to do the same. No green thumb necessary!

Our Farming Days are being hosted in partnership with Philadelphia Orchard Project. The food grown on Nice Roots Farm and Orchard is donated to local organizations fighting hunger.

Farm and Orchard activities will include:

  • Planting
  • Weeding
  • Harvesting produce
  • Watering
  • Raking
  • Mulching
  • Clean-up

Farming Tips and Preparation:

  • All ages are welcome; anyone under 16 should be accompanied by an adult
  • We recommend wearing closed-toed shoes as well as bringing a water bottle and protective mask. Bring garden gloves, if you have them.
  • Check the weather before arriving to make sure you are wearing an appropriate amount of layers.
  • Safety first! We highly encourage sun protection – much of the work area has full sun exposure most of the day! Recommended but not required: a hat, lightweight long sleeves and pants.
  • If you are prone to mosquito bites or allergic to insect stings, please take proper precautions before arriving

More about Nice Roots Farm

Nice Roots Farm is an urban agriculture project located in the Allegheny West neighborhood of Philadelphia, started in 2010. Through partnerships with the Philadelphia Orchard Project, the Philadelphia Horticultural Society, and Penn State Extension, the farm now features 20+ fruiting trees, two high tunnels for extended season growing and harvesting, and 20+ raised beds.

The quarter-acre farm grows over 4,000 lbs. annually of fully organic vegetables and herbs, and donates the yield to the community, to Share-affiliated pantries and mutual aid networks. The main function of Nice Roots Farm is to serve as a demonstration and educational space for the community.
