See what DC residents are saying about public safety

Opportunity DC conducted polling to hear how DC residents are feeling about public safety. Here's what we found:

  • 66% of DC voters have taken steps to enhance the safety of their home, vehicle, or workplace in the last year.
  • 54% of residents have changed their day-to-day activities due to concerns about crime.
  • 40% of residents say they or someone they know has been a victim of crime in the last year.

Furthermore, respondents agreed by a 2:1 margin that the DC Council was wrong to reduce MPD's budget in 2020, and 57% of voters say they want more police in their neighborhoods. The majority of voters (7 out of 10) say MPD needs more tools and resources to address crime and make DC safer.
