Fund Our Future, Close The Prisons

No matter our race, genders, or zip code, we all want whole families and safe, thriving communities.

For too long, we've allowed certain politicians to tell us that police and prisons are the only solutions to our challenges, fueling fears based on the color of our skin or the block we grew up on, in order to get buy-in for their lies. And in recent months, Trump and his billionaire backers have cut federal funding that supports our loved ones having someone to call in a mental health crisis, food programs our families rely on, and more, hurting all of Wisconsin. That's why we're asking Governor Evers to step up and get serious about safety.

It's time to fund community-based programs like treatment alternatives, diversions, and mental health care rather than relying on the failing prisons in Waupun, Milwaukee and Green Bay to solve all the problems our communities face. Studies have shown that these detainment centers are hazardous and basic functions, like lighting and heat, need major repair. This blocks the rehabilitation and safety of those inside, and it poses a risk to the staff employed there and anyone housed there temporarily. Our elected officials choosing to let this hazard continue are choosing fear and punishment over real safety and care.

Together, we call on Governor Evers, Department of Corrections Secretary Hoy and lawmakers in Wisconsin to immediately commit to the closures of these prisons and advance real safety our communities.

From the Northwoods to Milwaukee, we all deserve a safe walk home, quality public schools for our kids, affordable housing we can stay and grow old in, and opportunities to earn a good living. It's all possible when we choose another future where we all get what we need, no exceptions. Can we count on you?
