Tell the BLM: Stop Rounding Up Wyoming's Wild Horses!

RIGHT NOW, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is conducting a devastating roundup of Wyoming's wild horses.

The current plans would round up 4,397 wild horses living in 5 Herd Management Areas (HMAs): Little Colorado, White Mountain, Salt Wells Creek, Adobe Town, and Great Divide Basin.

The agency seeks to reduce the population to the low end of the Appropriate Management Level (AML) it has set for the area, which is 1,550–2,165 wild horses. Because of the BLM's unscientific census estimates, there is a real possibility that this massive roundup will reduce the populations below the low AML number, which would violate the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.

By the time this roundup is complete, 3,555 wild horses will have been taken into captivity — losing their families and their freedom, a forecasted 50+ wild horses will have been killed due to the treacherous conditions of helicopter roundups, and at most, 1,550 horses will be left in the wild — virtually eradicating wild horses from the Wyoming Checkerboard and surely devastating Wyoming's ecotourism industry.

The roundup and storage of the horses in holding facilities is estimated to cost taxpayers upwards of $175 million and will cut Wyoming's entire wild horse population by half  — all to clear the public land of wild horses for the benefit of private livestock ranchers.
