Tell PBS Board of Directors: Pull Misleading Wild Horse Segment

Last year, the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) aired an episode of "Human Footprint" series that categorized wild horses as an "invasive species" and proceeded to promote the lie that there are too many wild horses who are destroying our public lands. Ginger Kathrens who for years created award-winning documentaries for PBS was shocked and outraged to see this livestock propaganda being promoted on PBS. Even PBS' Public Editor, who serves as an independent critic of the journalistic integrity of PBS content, agrees the segment is misleading (out of context) and wrongly labels wild horses as "invasive." Still, PBS continues to promote this propaganda piece.

Please take a minute to contact the PBS Board of Directors urging them to adhere to high journalistic standards and to stop promoting corporate livestock unscientific propaganda. These lies about wild horses must stop if we are ever to get them their fair share and humane treatment. Please join TCF in calling out PBS on promoting the Wild Horse Lie.

I request the Board of Directors take immediate action to correct or remove unscientific misinformation regarding the portrayal of wild horses in episode one of the PBS "Human Footprint" series.

I greatly appreciate and value PBS as a fact-based source of information. But sadly that is not the case with the "Strangers in Paradise" episode of the "Human Footprint" series where wild horses are misportrayed as "invasive" animals destroying our public lands. The facts and science do not support this portrayal.

Your own PBS Public Editor, who acts as an independent critic of the journalistic integrity of PBS content, agrees the "Strangers In Paradise" wild horse segment is misleading and lacks context. Specifically, Mr. Sandoval-Palos calls out the complete omission of addressing the impacts of livestock grazing in the same areas where wild horses live. He also acknowledges the mislabeling of wild horses as "invasive." Yet, the producers of the series, which aired on PBS, intentionally omitted these pertinent facts and instead proceeded with repeating the unscientific lie that wild horses are responsible for the destruction of public lands.

We know the dangers of propaganda being used to misinform the unwitting public. Sadly, the public believes what outlets such as PBS state. We know corporate interests trump facts time and time again. To say the least, it is disappointing that PBS is willing to promote this corporate livestock propaganda. The livestock industry profits from taxpayer-funded grazing on our public lands and has a financial interest in continuing to promote the lie that wild horses are destroying our public lands despite the independent organizations (e.g. PEER, Western Watersheds Project, et al) whose research repeatedly proves that livestock grazing is the main culprit of range degradation.

I request the Board of Directors intervene to maintain PBS's journalistic integrity. Please take immediate action to either correct or remove the misleading segment on wild horses in the "Human Footprint" series.
