Arizona State Rep. Kelly Townsend has introduced a bill, HR 2858, that will harm the Salt River wild horses and therefore is opposed by most of the public that fought hard for the beloved herd's protection back in 2015. Last month's hearing on the bill before the Land & Agriculture Committee was packed with Arizonans who oppose the legislation.
Now Rep. Townsend is pushing her bill forward to the Rules Committee, which will hear it on Monday at a time when the legislature is limiting public testimony and encouraging the public not to attend committee hearings in order to minimize the spread of the coronavirus!
HB 2858 will block lifesaving humane management of the Salt River wild horse herd. This includes emergency rescue of horses with life threatening injuries and orphaned foals; supplemental feeding in times of drought to prevent starvation; and vital fertility control that is necessary to reduce population growth rates and keep the wild horses wild in the Tonto National Forest.
Let's not let Rep. Townsend take advantage of a national emergency to advance a bad bill that the public opposes!
