As supply chains break, demand is down, and slaughterhouses close due to public health concerns, farms across the United States are participating in what is being called “depopulations,” (the mass killing of unwanted animals). This appears to mostly be happening at very large farms known as CAFOs (concentrated animal feeding operations) or large industrial farms with news coverage focused on pig farms.
Some of these pig farms who cannot send the young pigs who have reached slaughter weight (4-6 months and 150-200 lbs) to auction or slaughterhouses are now selling pigs directly to the public to kill themselves or offering people a chance to come and butcher bodies at the farm (see screenshots below). Yet farms are largely unresponsive to sanctuaries and rescues offering homes and lifelong care for pigs and other animals.
This petition will be sent to the owners of 50 big corporate farms asking for them to surrender animals to sanctuaries or rescues if there is placement in lieu of categorical mass depopulation.
The only long-term solution is to boycott these industries and transition them to plant-based agriculture. However, if there are homes for animals now who would be killed and thrown away, farms should work with rescue groups to save some lives.
