Michigan lawmakers are strongly considering SB15, a proposal that would weaken earned paid sick time protections for over 1.7 million workers in our state. This bill would have serious consequences for working families, healthcare workers, and communities of color—groups that already struggle to access paid sick time. As members of this community, we must stand together to oppose these harmful changes and protect the rights of workers in Michigan.
By expanding the "small business" definition from 10 to 25 employees, this bill would strip essential protections from thousands of workers, disproportionately impacting our community. Healthcare workers, who are essential to our well-being, would face exemptions that could force them to work while sick, putting themselves and their patients at risk. The bill also removes protections for part-time workers, many of whom juggle multiple jobs to make ends meet. Parents would face more burdensome requirements when needing to care for sick children, including stricter documentation and notification rules.
Perhaps most concerning is the disproportionate impact this bill would have on Black and brown workers and their families, who are already 60% less likely to have access to paid sick time. These changes would only make it harder for vulnerable communities to thrive.
No one should have to choose between their health and their paycheck. We all deserve the peace of mind that comes with knowing we can take time off when we're sick—without risking our livelihood. Strong paid sick time protections are vital not only for the health of individual workers but for the well-being of our entire community. When workers are forced to come to work sick, they risk spreading illness to others, creating a ripple effect that affects us all.
The proposed changes would reverse important protections that Michigan voters have already supported. At a time when families are facing rising costs and ongoing health challenges, we cannot afford to roll back these essential workplace protections. Our community's health and economic stability depend on strong paid sick time laws.
By signing this petition, you join thousands of Michigan residents in standing up for workers' rights. Together, we can send a powerful message that we value the well-being of every member of our community and will not accept policies that harm working families.
