Close Rikers Rally at Foley Square

Over a week ago, the Federal Monitor assigned to Rikers Island issued a scathing report, sounding the alarm about the mishandling of five serious and disturbing incidents in city jails this month by the Department of Correction. Days after the report was released, news broke that Joshua Valles, who was incarcerated in the psychiatric unit at Rikers, had died. This is the 22nd death in city jails since Mayor took office. In response, Mayor Adam's and his cronies at DOC made an announcement that they will no longer be informing the public and press about the deaths of those incarcerated in NYC jails. In response, U.S. District Court Judge Laura Taylor Swain ordered an emergency conference to address the crisis unfolding at Rikers. It is appalling the lengths that this administration will go to blatantly put on the line the lives of so many New Yorkers. We need to put them to a stop!

Please join us on Tuesday, June 13th, 9 am at Foley Square for a rally to demand:

  •  Federal courts appoint a receiver to take over and improve conditions for people who are detained and employed at Rikers
  •  And that City Council take immediate action to hold this mayor accountable to: cut the jail population and correctional budgets, shut down the jail complex, and invest in real community safety: housing, health care, education, and jobs.
