Comprehensive And Medically Accurate Sex Education Is Necessary!

Comprehensive, medically accurate, and inclusive human sexuality education supports our youth to have knowledge about their bodies and the understanding to make healthy and informed choices. It will provide a new avenue to have their questions answered, preventing students from havig to rely on inaccurate information from unsafe sources. Tell your legislators to support SB258! SB258 will:

Ensure schools teach information that is medically accurate and complete, age and developmentally appropriate, culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and inclusive to LGBTQ+ youth and others historically left out of sexual health education.
Cover how individual student's religion and values may influence their decisions around sexual health and sexuality.
Preserve a parent's right to opt their student out.
Empower students with healthy communication skills and the tools to better navigate their own personal boundaries, help students form healthy relationships, and provide them with the resources to seek help if they are unsafe.

Students deserve the proper education to keep themselves safe, understand themselves and others, and recognize healthy relationships. The current system of sexuality education has no standard, and varies greatly from community to community. A great majority of young people in our state are receiving inaccurate, and objectively harmful information from teachers, leading to them seeking information from unreliable and unsafe sources, putting themselves in danger. This is especially true for LGBTQ  New Mexican youth, who as of now, are entirely left out of and othered in sex education conversations, leading to potentially riskier behavior due to misinformation.

We need a statewide standard of comprehensive, inclusive, and medically accurate sexual education in our schools. 
 
We must take this opportunity to educate our students effectively and accurately, now! Comprehensive and medically accurate sexual education should be provided to all students. Abstinence-only sex education is proven to be damaging and only leads our youth to make unhealthy choices, unknowingly putting themselves in dangerous situations.

We know the solution to this problem is access to information from trusted and knowledgeable sources. Studies show that inclusive relationship and sexuality education decreases bullying and harassment in schools, increases academic performance for students who receive it, and increases the likelihood of students defending each other when they witness bullying. Moreover, accurate education leads to healthier relationship choices, and decreases the chances of early sexual activity.

You can help make a difference in many young people's lives. SB258 will teach students how to have agency over their bodies, what healthy relationships look like, and the processes and definitions around consent. This would apply to all students across the state. It will provide an appropriate curriculum standard for students to learn, all while protecting the rights of parents to opt their child out of this education .
