As a New Hampshire resident, I deeply appreciate your service.

I am writing today to urge you to oppose House Bill 446, which would reverse the current opt-out option for the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, requiring families to opt-in.

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) is a completely anonymous, voluntary, and age-appropriate survey that allows young people to share their real-life experiences while maintaining their privacy. It is tailored to meet the specific needs of Granite State students and families.

The passage of HB 446 could lead to significantly reduced survey participation, making it impossible to collect the useful insights that keep youth in our community safe and healthy. Additionally, New Hampshire could lose dozens of programs and millions of dollars in prevention funding.

The trusted research of the YRBS helps parents, schools, and communities learn how to better prevent young people from engaging in unsafe or unhealthy behaviors. Topics of focus in the survey include many of the leading causes of poor health among young people, such as screen time, nutrition, physical activity, obesity, bullying, safe driving, mental health, pregnancy risk, violence, and alcohol, substance, and tobacco use.

Importantly, asking students about risky behaviors does not make it more likely they will engage in them. In fact, the survey can help parents have meaningful conversations with their teens about staying healthy. In addition, parents are already able to review the questions and can opt-out if they wish.

Please oppose HB 446 to protect the futures of Granite State students.
