Tell Interior Department and BLM: Address Violations in Wild Horse Holding Facilities

The Comprehensive Animal Welfare Program (CAWP) is a set of internal animal welfare guidelines that Bureau of Land Management (BLM) contractors are supposed to follow at roundups and at holding facilities. Unfortunately, these guidelines are not legally enforceable by the public but rather fall on the BLM to ensure their compliance, which seldom happens.

This year, because of a directive from Congress, the BLM has been conducting various CAWP assessments at holding facilities across the West. These internal reviews show widespread violations, including understaffing, lack of timely vaccination of captured wild horses and burros, inaccurate and inadequate recordkeeping, inadequate access to hay for all animals, horses in poor body condition, and issues related to construction and maintenance of the facilities.

We must demand change today. Add your name to contact Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland and BLM Director Tracy Stone-Manning and ask them to address violations and ensure the humane care of wild horses and burros in these facilities
