Close Rikers Rally at Foley Square

On July 10th, the Federal Monitor assigned to Rikers Island issued a damning report, where he recommended that the federal judge consider holding the Adams administration in contempt for its failure to implement the promised improvements at Rikers. In July, four incarcerated people have died in the custody of the New York City Department of Correction. This brings the total death toll in city jails under Mayor Adams to 26. It is clear that the DOC and the mayor are unwilling to address the long-standing issues plaguing the jail system. Violence is out of control and people's lives are at stake.

Until Rikers is closed, the federal courts must appoint a receiver to take over and improve conditions for people who are detained or employed there. Please join us for our close Rikers action on Thursday, August 10th. We're gathering at 12:30 at City Hall and will march together to Foley Square, near the federal court. At 1pm at Foley Square, we'll hold a rally to make clear that until Rikers is shut down, the courts must appoint a receiver to save lives.
