As someone who wants the best for our kids, I believe that we should stop the premature adultification of students and provide children with the care and support they need.

I’m joining the Let a Child Be a Child Campaign to ask that you co-sponsor and/or support S. 2125, the Counseling not Criminalization in Schools Act, legislation that would end federal funding for school-based law enforcement and instead, invest in positive support systems to help children grow and thrive in school.

Studies have shown that increased criminalization in schools causes harm to students of color, students with disabilities, students experiencing homelessness, students involved in the foster care system, other historically marginalized students, and the entire school community.

What we need is a move toward evidence-based and trauma-informed services like counselors, nurses, and restorative approaches to discipline.

Even prior to the severe impact of the pandemic, 72% of students experienced a traumatic event before they turn 18. Unfortunately, only 2 states meet the recommended student-to-counselor ratio of 250:1 and many are closer to 500:1. Students need additional support now more than ever. This bill would help to provide the care that kids need to thrive in schools.
