As the head of the world's largest food company, you have a moral obligation to address animal abuse in McDonald's supply chain.
I'm extremely disappointed by your “commitment” to improving chicken welfare––it's clearly just a distraction tactic used to avoid taking full responsibility for the suffering animals endure under your watch. Your policy falls far short of what your competitors are doing, as it does not include moving to higher welfare breeds that have been assessed by a third party (GAP or RSPCA). Nor does it include reducing overcrowding on chicken factory farms.
I urge you to join the more than 85 other major food companies and restaurants that have publicly committed to holding their suppliers to these higher standards.
Chickens raised for McDonald's menu items are bred to grow so unnaturally large, so fast, that they often collapse under their own weight. Many live in constant physical pain, and they are vulnerable to crippling limb injuries and heart attacks. These intelligent birds spend their entire lives crammed in filthy sheds with tens of thousands of other birds. They suffer every day.
It's time for McDonald's to step up and make a change.
I support The Humane League and their efforts to reduce animal suffering. Chickens make up 88% of all animals slaughtered on factory farms every year. Since 350 million chickens raised are earmarked for McDonald's, your company has the unique opportunity to lead a movement that will improve the lives of millions of animals every year. Until these changes are made, I will boycott all McDonald's restaurants.
