Ask Congress to pass the One Health Act of 2019 During "Lame Duck"

The election is over and the new Congress will be sworn in on January 20, 2021. Before then, the current Congress enters a period called the "Lame Duck" when legislation usually passes quickly and without controversy because legislators who lost their elections, or are retiring, are more willing to join the majority and approve bills.

This is an important opportunity to advocate for passage of the One Health Act of 2019. This legislation requires federal agencies to coordinate with human and animal health professionals to create a "One Health Framework" that will help the federal government better respond to future zoonotic disease (diseases passed from animals to humans) outbreaks like COVID-19.

Responsibility for addressing human, animal, and environmental health is spread across multiple federal agencies without sufficient coordination of their activities. As a result, the government is currently ill equipped to prevent, prepare for, and respond to zoonotic disease outbreaks.

Emailing Congress and using our voices to highlight important legislation like the One Health Act will help ensure the Lame Duck session is used to prevent future global pandemics. Take action today!
