Demand President Trump Stop Promoting and Politicizing Anti-Semitism

We cannot allow senseless lies and anti-Semitic diatribes to become the new normal. Yet that is exactly what President Trump has done with his rhetoric and policies, which we know have inspired the unprecedented rise in hate crimes targeting Jews.

Speaking to the Republican Jewish Coalition on Saturday, April 6, President Trump displayed an astonishing level of ignorance when he referred to Benjamin Netanyahu as “your” prime minister. In addition to treating us Jews as one political monolith, this also perpetuates an anti-Semitic stereotype of Jews, which unfortunately he had repeated before.

Trump's comments acted as a “dual loyalty” accusation, failing to recognize that we are proud Jewish Americans. Implying Jews of being loyal to another government and not their own is a recurring anti-Semitic accusation that has been used to disenfranchise Jews for ages. American Jews might have a deep love of Israel, but we do not have a prime minister. We have a president – and he's the very one launching anti-Semitic remarks.

In the same speech, President Trump asked those in the audience to get “some of your people” onboard with the president's trade agenda. These comments equally demonstrate a frightening ignorance and ease with dispensing anti-Semitic stereotypes about Jews controlling financial institutions and markets.

This is not the first time Trump has trafficked in anti-Semitic language. In 2015, then candidate Trump – again from the stage of the RJC – accused Jews of using money to control politicians and noted, “you're not going to support me because I don't want your money.” As President, he equated neo-Nazis and white supremacists with those peacefully protesting them, calling them both “very fine people.”

In recent weeks, he has used the rise of anti-Semitism as a political wedge issue and has made false charges regarding Democrats and Jews. We have to combat these lies with truth, and demand the President of the United States stop using anti-Semitism to gain political points and start taking action to combat anti-Semitism.
