Be:Seattle and the Transit Riders Union are collaborating to build out a strong renter network. Join our monthly renter organizing council for Seattle renters to work together to strategize and fight for renter protections, give and provide peer-to-peer support for folks organizing in their buildings, build community, and grow renter power!
The Seattle City Council may soon consider weakening or repealing some of our renter protection laws. We expect legislation could be introduced in early February.
Sign up below to join the Seattle Renter Organizing Council (SROC). That means we'll keep you in the loop and let you know as soon as there's an opportunity to fight back.
Here are some of the protections we currently have as renters that we could be in danger of losing:
If you are on a year-long or 6-month lease, the landlord cannot terminate your tenancy at the end of the lease unless they have a good reason.
Landlords must give 6 months' notice of a rent increase.
Many tenants are protected from eviction during the winter.
Families are protected from eviction during the school year.
Tenants have a right to live with a family member or roommate.
If you're the first qualified applicant for an apartment, the landlord can't refuse to rent to you.
If your landlord raises the rent more than 10% in a year and you move out, you are entitled to relocation assistance of three times the monthly rent.
If renters don't get together to protect our rights, we could lose them. Sign up here to join SROC and invite your friends to join too. We have power in numbers.
