In 2012 I was training for my first registered race when I was suddenly diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis (TM). This rare diagnosis caused me to put my passion for being active on pause. Instead, my focus was on re-learning how to independently do my activities of daily living. TM changed a lot about the way I live, including leading me to my career as an Occupational Therapist. It was my intention to complete this race at my 10 year TM anniversary. However, after working on the frontlines during this global pandemic I was struck, yet again, with how precious life is. So, on June 27th, 2021 I plan to SWIM 1.2 MI, BIKE 56 MI AND RUN 13.1 MI and cross the Ironman 70.3 Steelhead finish line! In doing so, my hope is to raise money for the Siegel Rare Neuroimmune Association (SRNA), a nonprofit organization with a mission to improve the quality of life for any person diagnosed with a rare neuroimmune disorder. I cannot speak highly enough about this organization. When I was initially diagnosed they made me feel less alone, despite the fact that very little was understood about the disease. Most recently, the organization started a "COVID and Rare Neuroimmune Disorders" page, which includes a Q&A series led by a panel of experts, research study and continual posts with updates from the CDC regarding covid and rare neuroimmune disorders. This page ultimately led me to find my new neurologist who cleared me to received my COVID vaccine with confidence thus, allowing me to do my part in helping others on the frontlines. This organization truly works daily to continue to improve the quality of life of individuals with rare neuroimmune disorders. Thank you all for your love, considering and continuous support.
