AEP Rate Hike & NEM

Tell the WV Public Service Commission to protect us from higher electric bills

AEP is seeking another rate increase for West Virginians despite their electric rates already having more than doubled in the past 15 years. The rate increases are making it increasingly difficult for families, small businesses, churches, and schools to afford their electric bills.

Under the proposal, there would be an overall bill increase of up to $23.74 per month, or approximately 13.5%, for a residential customer using 1,000 kWh per month. The average West Virginia residential customer uses 1,123 kWh per month. AEP also has introduced a proposal to spread out the cost over time, which may reduce the impact, but not all details are available yet.

In addition, the proposal makes solar far less affordable for aspiring solar panel owners, slashing the “net metering” credit for excess energy produced, by about two-thirds.

Complete the form below to tell the West Virginia Public Service Commission to say NO to these harmful changes and say YES to helping us reduce our energy bills.

Dear [elected official],

I OPPOSE: * AEP’s proposal to increase rates for residents, small businesses, and nonprofit institutions and * AEP’s proposal to slash fair market net metering rates by two-thirds for residential customers who go solar after the new rates go into effect. Our electric bills have gone up enough already, they don’t need to go up any more, and customers should be able to cut costs by going solar if they want to.

We cannot allow AEP’s monopoly utilities to get away with yet another big rate increase and pull the plug on fair market net metering for its West Virginia customers. This proposal interferes with our ability to make ends meet. Approving their proposal will have significant consequences, impacting every AEP customer in West Virginia.

Sincerely, [Your information here]
