Sign the petition calling on the Michigan Public Service Commission — the body that regulates and oversees our utilities — to put a moratorium on rate increases until we see significant improvements to service.
Petition Text:
Frequent power outages from DTE and Consumers Energy have caused significant disruptions for Michigan ratepayers, leaving nearly one million Michigan residents out of power at a time, in some cases for as long as a week.
While Michiganders face constant rate increases year-after-year, we receive sub-par service from our utility companies. A 2020 report by the Independent Citizens Utility Board of Michigan found that Michigan utilities had the second-worst restoration time per outage in the nation even on days without major storm events. Furthermore, in the Great Lakes region, Michiganders experience the most amount of minutes out-of-power on average annually.
Michiganders pay some of the highest costs for electricity in the Midwest and receive the poorest service. Meanwhile, utility companies are making windfall profits.
This is a slap in the face to Michigan customers. Promises of one-time payments and tree trimming are not sufficient.
State leaders in the Legislature and the Michigan Public Service Commission that oversees our utility companies must step up for residential customers.
We call for a moratorium on all rate increases until there is an independent investigation into why Michiganders suffer through more and longer outages than any other state in the Great Lakes Region.
We demand answers and we are calling on state leaders to stand up for Michigan ratepayers.
