Thank you for taking the time to read my message and for your commitment to the education of New Hampshire children.

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding Senate Bill 96, which would put students at risk with an overreaching government mandate that educators disclose any student’s perceived gender identity or sexual orientation with parents upon request.

SB 96 poses a significant threat to the mental health and well-being of Granite State youth. The bill would erode trust between teachers and students, which would lead to students having fewer dependable adults to go to for confidential help regarding a variety of issues, not just those related to gender and orientation.

Forced outing could damage parent-child relationships and harm families. Youth could lose the opportunity to share their LGBTQ+ identity in their own way when they are ready.

I understand that parental rights and open communication between young people, parents, and teachers is important, but SB 96 is not an appropriate way to further those goals.

Please consider the unintended harms SB 96 could create for our youth and oppose this bill.
