To our Representatives & Senators,
Iowans from all walks of life – Republicans and Democrats, businesses large and small, people from every part of the state – share the fundamental value that every Iowan should have the same opportunities and protections for themselves and their families.
The success of my organization is central to my livelihood. That's why I feel so strongly that having Iowa become a place that's known for intolerance is dangerous for organizations like mine. No one wants to live, work, or shop in a hostile environment. Iowa currently in the midst of an economic recovery – we can't afford to give hard-working Iowans reasons to feel unwelcome here at home. It's an increasingly competitive marketplace – my business needs all the talented employees and dedicated customers it can get.
Two years ago our proud state – once a national leader in ensuring equality for our gay and transgender friends, family, and neighbors – passed more anti-LGBTQ legislation than any other state in the nation. A year ago more than a dozen bills targeting LGBTQ Iowans were introduced. In this session, a new slate of anti-LGBTQ legislation is being considered in your chambers. These bills run the gamut from weakening longstanding non-discrimination protections for gay and trans people all the way to specifically targeting trans youth and the parents, teachers, and medical providers who support them. That's not who we are as Iowans and that's not what we want our state to be known for.
Discrimination is wrong, and we believe it has no place in our state. As businesses that prides ourselves on being part of inclusive and welcoming communities, we oppose any legislation that takes aim at the LGBTQ community and we strongly urge you to do what's right for our businesses and our communities by opposing these bills.
