Formed in 2021, Memphis Tenants Union (MTU) is dedicated to building tenant power in a city and state dominated by laws and regulations written by landlords. We envision a world where housing is a human right, not a commodity to maximize profit. To make this world a reality, we are organizing a multi-racial, multi-generational, working-class base with the power to make critical changes to housing in Memphis.
To build our base, MTU supports site-based tenant unions throughout Memphis. One example, the Memphis Towers Tenants Union was created in 2022 at Memphis Towers, a Section-8 funded apartment complex in the Medical District. Through organizing their neighbors and tireless advocacy at the local and federal level, MTTU was able to kick out their slumlord (Millennia) earlier this year! MTTU has also won critical improvements to the living conditions at the property, such as a working hot water boiler, 24-hour security, and more!
Help us support tenant leaders fight their landlords all across Memphis! Your donation will expand our organizing capacity and ensure that every tenant has a voice. Join us in championing community power, housing justice, and the leadership of those most affected by the crisis. Every donation counts. Together, we can transform Memphis's housing system to prioritize human rights over profit.
