PETITION FOR THE "WHOLE TRUTH": Full Disclosure in Talon Metals Environmental Review
Background:
Talon Metals has promoted the 11-mile Tamarack Mineral Intrusion as a “district scale” deposit of nickel, copper, and other metals in a 30,000-acre area they control. The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed Talon Metals mine must include the whole truth about potential impacts of this entire foreseeable Talon Metals mine on local and downstream wetlands, waters, lands, airsheds, ecosystems, Treaty-reserved resources, and the health and welfare of communities from the local Sandy and West Branch Kettle Rivers to the downstream, Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers.
In October 2022, even before the Talon Metals Tamarack mine was formally proposed, the Biden Administration granted nearly $115 million to Talon Metals to build a plant in North Dakota to process nickel sulfide ore from the Tamarack, Minnesota Talon mine. The Talon nickel mine had undergone no environmental study and received no permits. The company has conducted no consultation with affected Indigenous communities, obtained no tribal consent, and provided virtually no information to the community on impacts to local or downstream waters. The site in North Dakota, which would also impact water-rich areas and Indigenous communities, had not been studied or permitted either.
Sign Our Petition:
Each undersigned person asks Governor Tim Walz and DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen to require that the Talon Metals EIS evaluate the full and cumulative impacts of mining the entire “district scale” Tamarack Mineral Intrusion.
