Hunters and Anglers support H.R. 3195, S.1081, Land and Water Conservation Fund permanent funding, BWCA protection

I am your constituent, and I urge you to stand with me and Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters to support H.R. 3195 and S. 1081 to permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

There are 82,400 acres of School Trust Lands in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness that are caught in the balance of this funding conflict today. In 2012, those school trust lands (in the Boundary Waters, but not able to contribute to the Trust) were slated to be purchased using funds from LWCF. School Trust Lands, which are legislatively mandated to produce revenue for the funding of Minnesota’s public schools on industrial timberlands, cannot currently be used for their intended purpose. The existing School Trust Lands in the Boundary Waters should be transferred to Federal ownership and lands outside the Wilderness should be provided to the trust outside using funds from LWCF, private partners and NGOs.

Additionally, these lands should not be polluted with proposed sulfide-ore copper mining in their watershed after their purchase using LWCF funds.

LWCF’s permanent funding will lead to improved access to public land in Northeastern Minnesota and additional funding for conservation programs that affect the Boundary Waters. Support H.R. 3195 and S. 1081, legislation that permanently funds the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
