Filbin Creek Needs Your Help

Filbin Creek Needs Your Help

Water quality testing by Charleston Waterkeeper shows that Filbin Creek at Hendricks Park fails to meet South Carolina's water quality standard for safe recreational use. In fact, testing shows persistent and very high levels of contamination by Enterococcus fecal bacteria. High bacteria levels indicate disease-causing pathogens and other microorganisms may be present and that recreational activity is not safe.

Hendricks Park is an essential community asset and access point to Filbin Creek and the Cooper River. The park provides a key public boat ramp and one of the only tidal creek fishing and crabbing docks for public use in North Charleston. Locals frequently fish, crab, paddle, boat, or enjoy the park and creek for recreational and traditional fishing activities.

Our community has a right to a safe and healthy Filbin Creek for fishing, crabbing, and swimming. Accordingly, we, the undersigned, formally request that the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control use the fullest extent of its authority and take action to list Filbin Creek as impaired for recreational use at Hendricks Park and designate the creek with its highest priority for cleanup.
