State and federal funding support a variety of school-based food programs but when children head home for the weekend, many are left without access to food. Since 2010, Every Meal has been filling this weekend food gap for school-age children in Minnesota, raising $29MM almost entirely through community donations. Through our successful backpack food program, the Weekend Meal Program, we've become a leader in efficiently and effectively getting food to kids.
The Legislature can help through a one-time, $4 million cash investment toward an $8 million distribution hub that serves as a statewide backpack service delivery network for weekend food support. This would be a nation-leading investment in our school-age children to help them be their best every day, not just when they are in school. SF2223/HF2546 (Maye Quade/Becker-Finn) will increase Every Meal's capacity to serve Minnesota children struggling with food insecurity on weekends throughout the school year long-term. Every Meal is ready to address this tremendous need and we urge you to take action to make this happen. View the school districts and other organizations in support of this Bill here.
