I am writing to ask for your support on S3672/A4987, the Immigrant Trust Act. The Immigrant Trust Act establishes necessary protections for New Jersey’s immigrant community. As a New Jersey resident, I envision my state as a fair and welcoming place that ensures that all people have an opportunity to support themselves and look out for their friends and family.

Many New Jersey residents do not feel the same sense of belonging and protection. New Jersey’s immigrants should not be prevented from accessing services that they are entitled to because of a fear of deportation when accessing those services. The Immigrant Trust Act takes important steps to build trust in public agencies so that all of us, regardless of immigration status, can access the services that are intended for all community members, like healthcare, education, and law enforcement.

The Immigrant Trust Act (S3672/A4987) creates, codifies, and strengthens protections between New Jersey immigrants and local and state agencies. S3672/A4987 will:

- Protect privacy: Create new data privacy protections for people who interact with state and local agencies 
- Strengthen community trust: Codify the separation between federal immigration enforcement and local law enforcement 
- Ensure that local resources stay local: Prioritize the use of local fund on priorities rather than funding federal immigration enforcement 
- Create a welcoming community: Require public schools, health care facilities, libraries, and shelters to adopt model policies to help people feel safer when utilizing public services that they are eligible for 
- Safegard immigrant rights: Prohibit state and local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities when doing so is voluntary under federal law 
- Protect immigrants entangled in the criminal legal system: By eliminating carve-outs in the New Jersey Attorney General’s Immigrant Trust Directive 
- Create Accountability: By creating reporting requirements to track compliance with the Act
