BUILD CADY LOFTS
Sign the Statement: I Support Cady Lofts—100 Units of Permanent Supportive Housing Will Save Lives

Cady Lofts lofts is a permanent supportive housing (PSH) development proposed for East 39th St., at the edge of the Hancock Neighborhood, near the I-35 frontage road. This project, located in a high opportunity area that is well-connected to food access, job opportunities, and public transit, will provide 100 housing units with wraparound services to those in our city who most desperately need them. This is about more than just housing: it is about saving lives.

New Hope Housing, an organization based out of Houston, with a well-documented track record and excellent national reputation, will coordinate supportive services and provide management oversight. They will provide a valuable addition to Austin's service and housing community. Unfortunately, a set of inaccurate and misleading claims have been made with the intent to draw neighborhood opposition to this project. A petition has been circulated in opposition to the zoning changes needed, putting the project itself in jeopardy. Members of this neighborhood have long been asking the city to “do something” about nearby encampments: this is the plan in action. Now, more than ever, it is important for Austin's community to unite, challenge false claims, and defend permanent supportive housing and equitable access to opportunities—everywhere in Austin. Even with the best of intentions, outcomes matter. We cannot deny much needed housing today, for the promise of something better in a distant future. Unfortunately, some of our unhoused neighbors, like Rosemary, will not have another year to wait.

Cady Lofts will help the city meet the goal of housing 3,000 people in three years. For those of us who believe that housing is a human right, and that it is possible to bring the numbers of those experiencing unsheltered homelessness in our community to a functional zero, this case is where the rubber meets the road. We cannot deny the zoning changes needed to make the Cady Lofts project successful and affordable, and we cannot afford to postpone or delay. Join the Austin Justice Coalition, ECHO, The Other Ones Foundation, We Can Now and many more groups in unapologetically affirming that we need this project, and we need it now.
