We all deserve the right to protest, to exist in public, and to wear religious and cultural garments, and take health precautions, all while being recognized as human beings who care for one another.
But a disturbing proposal currently being discussed by the Texas State Affairs Committee threatens these rights. This proposal, harshly labeled as “Unmasking Protestors,” seeks to PREVENT wearing face coverings during protests under the false pretense of preventing crime.
This is not just about masks. It is about policing Texans' presence and expression in public spaces.
The language in this proposal deliberately targets individuals who are already vulnerable and often marginalized, such as disabled people, those with health concerns, and communities who wear religious or cultural garments.
Similar laws have historically been used to criminalize movements and people of color, not to address any real threat.
By proposing such legislation, Texas lawmakers are undermining our fundamental freedoms, including the right to freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and freedom of religion.
It is a dangerous attempt to make people feel unsafe for standing up for what they believe in or simply being themselves.
Add your voice, sign this petition, and tell Texas lawmakers to protect our freedoms, not take them away.
