I urge you to immediately rescind the policy that recently capped OUSD external contracts because it is resulting in devastating cuts of 50–80% to vital after school programs that students and families depend on.

These proposed cuts would result in over half of OUSD’s after school population losing access to critical after school programs that keep students safe, engaged, fed, and academically supported.  This will also be catastrophic for working families who depend on OUSD’s lead agencies to care for their children so they can maintain their own employment.

ASES, ELO-P, and 21st Century grants are legally restricted to supporting before school, after school, weekend, and summer programs. These funds cannot be repurposed or cut without risking OUSD falling out of compliance with state and federal requirements—potentially leading to even greater budget issues.

I urge you to reverse the Board’s action, restore after school funding, and keep these lifeline programs running for Oakland students and families.
