This November Mainers will vote on an Extreme Risk Protection Order initiative that will help save lives and prevent future tragedies like Lewiston. Extreme Risk Protection Orders empower family members to get help by going directly to a court when a loved one is in crisis and may pose a threat to themselves or others. Through due process, a judge can temporarily restrict their access to deadly weapons. These laws have been used effectively in 21 other states to disarm people who have threatened mass violence, including school shootings, as well as been proven to reduce suicide. Under an ERPO law, both Maine family members and law enforcement could intervene before a crisis becomes a tragedy.
