Restore the Eklutna River

The Eklutna River once provided habitat for a thriving, sustainable run of all five species of Pacific salmon and supported the way of life of the Eklutna people. In 1929 the water was diverted for the Municipality of Anchorage's growing energy needs. The impacts on the watershed dramatically changed the people of Eklutna's lives and the salmon habitat.

The last century of hydroelectric development permanently altered the thriving salmon run that the people of Eklutna and surrounding communities depended on. It is time that we begin to heal the damage of the past and fully restore this fundamental part of Alaska's heritage. We must restore the river to ensure a healthy and sustainable habitat for fish and for traditional subsistence uses to continue.

I support the Native Village of Eklutna's vision for a fully restored Eklutna River. I'm signing to urge the owners of the Hydrolectric Project to return the water to the Eklutna River in the following ways:

  • From the lake itself
  • In a volume that reflects how the river was before the dam throughout the year
  • In a way that allows salmon to swim upstream to the lake under their own power and for juvenile fish to return to the sea
  • A more stable lake level to support sockeye spawning.
