The Eklutna River once provided habitat for a thriving, sustainable run of all five species of Pacific salmon and supported the way of life of the Eklutna people. In 1929 the water was diverted for the Municipality of Anchorage's growing energy needs. The impacts on the watershed dramatically changed the people of Eklutna's lives and the salmon habitat.
The last century of hydroelectric development permanently altered the thriving salmon run that the people of Eklutna and surrounding communities depended on. It is time that we begin to heal the damage of the past and fully restore this fundamental part of Alaska's heritage. We must restore the river to ensure a healthy and sustainable habitat for fish and for traditional subsistence uses to continue.
