Public Letter from Health Professionals to Keep the Law (SB 1137) to Protect Neighborhoods from Oil and Gas Drilling

We are health professionals from across the United States sounding the alarm as the oil industry tries to exploit California's referendum process in order to roll back a 2022 law protecting community health from toxic oil and gas drilling.

In 2022, after decades of community organizing, the California legislature overwhelmingly passed a law (SB1137) prohibiting new oil and gas wells within 3,200 feet of homes, schools, daycare centers, parks, healthcare facilities, and businesses. It also requires that existing wells meet strengthened health, safety, and environmental requirements.

Oil and gas corporations are spending tens of millions to fool voters into overturning this common sense law.

As health professionals, we have a responsibility to advocate for policies that promote the health of our patients and communities. We call on Californians to Keep the Law this coming November and protect neighborhoods from oil and gas drilling.
