Tell Congress: Stand up for our civil rights

The victories of the civil rights movement are on the line.In late April, Trump signed an executive order demanding federal agencies stop enforcing civil rights laws based on “disparate impact.”

What is disparate impact?

After abolitionists won the Civil War, the government began to enact laws that prohibited discrimination based on race, sex, religion. Despite some gains, these laws fell short of addressing the unequal impacts of practices that pretend to be neutral, but were manufactured to keep everyone but the wealthy, white few out of power.

In the 1971 case of Griggs v. Duke Power, SCOTUS ruled that otherwise neutral employment practices can violate the Civil Rights Act when they disproportionately affect a protected group and are not demonstrably related to job performance. This set the precedent for disparate impact civil rights laws.

This has helped ensure that businesses, housing authorities, hospitals, and other institutions can't find loopholes to discriminate against everyone who isn't white, wealthy, and male. But the MAGA regime is trying to undo this progress.
