No MSCS State Takeover!

Write to your state legislators now and tell them to vote NO on a MSCS state takeover.

Our MSCS board is in a difficult season, but we strongly believe that the people of Memphis should maintain democratic control of the Memphis-Shelby County School Board. We are disappointed that    Shelby County State Representatives Mark White and John Gillespie and Senator Brent Taylor are pushing forward bill, HB662/ SB714, that would create a board of managers, appointed by state legislators, that would have complete decision-making power over MSCS.

A state-appointed advisory board is NOT a democratic board accountable to the people of Memphis.  462,633 registered Shelby County School Board voters would be disenfranchised and SILENCED by HB662/ SB714.

Instead of a state takeover, we are calling for the implementation of democratic mechanisms to ensure that our voices are heard and keep School Board Members accountable including

  • Term-Limits for MSCS School Board Members;
  • A democratic recall process for MSCS School Board Members;
  • A democratic referendum process to vote on key issues governed by the MSCS School Board.

Join other Memphians and send a letter today to your state legislators to demand democratic control of the Memphis-Shelby County School Board!
