We, the undersigned, ask U.S. Senator Klobuchar to introduce legislation permanently protecting Superior National Forest lands on Moose Mountain as a National Protection Area. Moose Mountain is the most geologically prominent feature in the state of Minnesota and a crown jewel of the North Shore. Most of the mountain, including the summit, is public land, managed by the Superior National Forest. Because of Moose Mountain's prominence, the mountain provides backcountry skiing and ridgetop hiking opportunities that are unique in Minnesota. These and other values associated with Moose Mountain are threatened by development plans that would turn the mountain into a private ski resort, further shrinking land available to the beneficiaries of the 1854 Treaty of La Pointe and taking way the most skiable vertical relief publicly available to skiers in the Midwest. Federal legislation is necessary to protect these important public lands for all to enjoy, now and in future generations.
