Protect Outdoor Experiences in the Southern Sierra

The Sierra and Sequoia National Forests are revising their forest management plans - the document that outlines the guiding vision for how each forest will be managed for the next 20-30 years. The Forest Service recently published draft management plans for these forests and they're looking for input from you to decide what direction to take the final plans.

Outdoor Alliance is teaming up with its partner groups to protect, promote, and enhance outdoor experiences in the southern Sierra. You can help by sharing your feedback with the Forest Service on recreation in the Southern Sierra. We have a comment letter template ready for you to use below - it already contains some of the technical jargon and comments about how the plans can be improved. The Forest Service is most likely to read and take into consideration letters that are personalized, so please revise the comment.

Thank you for the opportunity to participate through public comment on these important forest management plan revisions. I frequently visit both the Sierra and Sequoia National Forests to hike, paddle, ride my mountain bike, rock climb, or backcountry ski. I am hopeful that these plans, when they are finalized and implemented, will help to protect and enhance sustainable recreation opportunities on these special public lands for the next twenty or thirty years, as well as to protect the landscapes and wildlife that we all enjoy and depend on.

To that end, I hope you will consider including provisions in both plans that:

- Provide for due consideration of existing recreation infrastructure and possible new opportunities for sustainable recreation (trails, trailheads, climbing access, whitewater put-ins, camping sites, etc.) as you are analyzing and implementing forest health and fuels management projects.
- Recognize rock climbing as a legitimate wilderness and non-wilderness activity both inside and outside of the Sustainable Recreation Management Zones and the conditional use of fixed climbing anchors as appropriate.
- Prioritize working with local governments and communities, recreation user groups, and other nonprofit or non-governmental entities to fund, develop and maintain sustainable multi-use and dedicated mountain bike singletrack within appropriate Recreation and Backcountry Management Areas outside of designated and recommended Wilderness.
- Properly identify and evaluate the whitewater boating that takes place on the rivers throughout both the Sierra and Sequoia Forests to promote sustainable recreation. Take a watershed approach in evaluating these rivers for inclusion in the inventory of eligible Wild & Scenic Rivers. Specifically, prioritizing the evaluation of identified whitewater resources to consider merits of whitewater boating as an ORV.
