Call on President Trump to Denounce White Supremacy
Anti-Semitism and white supremacy should have no place in American political discourse. Yet President Trump's rhetoric is normalizing this dangerous bigotry. It is no coincidence that the unprecedented rise in hate crimes targeting Jews aligns with Trump's presidency.
Only one day before the attack at Chabad of Poway, President Trump defended his reference to neo-Nazis and white supremacists marching in Charlottesville as “very fine people,” and he defended Robert E. Lee, who waged war against the United States to defend white supremacy. In six months, white supremacist gunmen have attacked and murdered Jews in two synagogues.
Speaking to the Republican Jewish Coalition on April 6, President Trump displayed an astonishing level of ignorance when he referred to Benjamin Netanyahu as “your” prime minister. In addition to treating Jews as a political monolith, Trump again perpetuated the anti-Semitic “dual loyalty” trope.
Implying Jews are loyal to another government and not their own is a recurring anti-Semitic accusation that has been used to disparage Jews for ages. American Jews might have a deep love of Israel, but we do not have a prime minister. We have a president – and he's the very one launching anti-Semitic remarks.
In the same speech, President Trump asked those in the audience to get “some of your people” onboard with the president's trade agenda. These comments also demonstrate a frightening ignorance and ease with dispensing anti-Semitic stereotypes about Jews controlling financial institutions and markets.
This is not the first time Trump has trafficked in anti-Semitic language. In 2015, then candidate Trump – again from the stage of the RJC – accused Jews of using money to control politicians and noted, “you're not going to support me because I don't want your money.”
President Trump and his Republican allies continue to politicize the rise of anti-Semitism and make false charges regarding Democrats and Jews, while ignoring the threat posed by white supremacy. We have to combat these lies with truth, and demand the President of the United States stop weaponizing anti-Semitism and start taking action to combat anti-Semitism and white supremacy.
