River Street Petition

Create a safer way for pedestrians to cross River Street in front of John E Thomas Hall

We (Harmony Lanes) are writing to you today to express our deep concern about the issue of being able to safely cross River Street in front of John E Thomas Hall. This safety concern has been affecting students, staff, and members of the community for years. There have been repeated accidents at this location despite multiple requests to various authorities to do something about it. We feel that it is our responsibility to take action and demand change since students and visitors have found it unsafe and difficult to cross River Street. Fortunately, there is somewhat of an unofficial pedestrian refuge island, but an indication of pedestrians crossing is still lacking. This petition is being started to urge for action and address this issue. Your support is necessary for change and ensuring students and community members are respected and treated fairly. We believe that a safe crosswalk would go a long way towards addressing this issue and improving the safety of those affected by it. We ask that you consider our request and take action to make a positive change.

Request:

  • Install a crosswalk in front of John E Thomas Hall that runs across River Street
  • Install an official pedestrian refuge island that cautions drivers about potential crossers
  • Install brightly colored "Stop for Pedestrians in Crosswalk" signs
  • Install flashing beacons that pedestrians can trigger when needed using a push button

The installation of a crosswalk, pedestrian refuge island, and high visibility signage with flashing beacons on River Street would dramatically improve pedestrian safety. A crosswalk creates a defined and marked place for pedestrians to cross, warning drivers to be cautious and yield. The pedestrian refuge island, located midway across the roadway, provides a safe halting spot for people who are unable to cross the entire width in one go, lowering the chance of accidents. This is especially useful in busy areas like River Street, where traffic is intense and constant. These features not only reduce vehicle speeds but also raise driver awareness of pedestrian activities, making the crossing experience safer and more manageable.
