On June 11, 2025, the EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin signed a proposal to repeal critical climate pollution standards that protect our air. The Carbon Pollution from Power Plants Rule Repeal would eliminate all greenhouse gas emissions standards for fossil-fuel-fired power plants—among the largest sources of climate pollution in America. This proposal is based on the false claim that emissions from these facilities do not contribute significantly to dangerous air pollution, directly contradicting decades of established science and abandoning the EPA's fundamental mission to protect public health.

This proposal threatens to undo regulations that will help prevent 230,000 premature deaths each year and have delivered $2 trillion in health and economic benefits since 1990. We cannot allow political ideology to override scientific evidence when human, animal, and planetary health hang in the balance!

I urge you to reject the repeal of the Greenhouse Gas Emission Standards for Fossil Fuel Fired Electric Generating Units, also known as Power Plants Carbon Pollution Standards. I'm adding my voice to the more than 1 million people on the record in support of carbon pollution standards. I do not support the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) plan to weaken power plant carbon pollution standards, which limit carbon pollution from existing coal-fired and new gas-fired power plants.

Cutting U.S. climate pollution is critical for the well-being of our citizenry. Power plants are a significant source of carbon pollution. The power sector is responsible for 25% of total U.S. climate pollution and the EPA estimates that these standards would avoid 1.38 billion metric tons of carbon pollution between 2028 and 2047. They are also projected to produce $270 billion in climate benefits.

The proposed repeal erroneously claims that carbon pollution from power plants does not contribute significantly to climate change. This claim is not only wrong, it blatantly contradicts science with harmful consequences: Carbon pollution from power plants is the second largest source of climate pollution in the U.S. and scientists overwhelmingly agree that carbon pollution is fueling the climate crisis with devastating impacts on communities across the country. Going forward every additional ton of CO2 added to the atmosphere will contribute to further acceleration of the warming with resulting impacts on human health, including death. Rolling back these power plant standards will cost thousands of lives, exacerbate climate change, and threaten our health.

Climate warming has suddenly, and unexpectedly, accelerated since 2020 causing the planet to reach 1.5 C above baseline in 2024 instead of the mid-2030s as expected in the IPCC models. The science makes clear that the only strategy for protecting the public from increasing harm caused by these adverse impacts on human health is to stop the warming by stabilizing the climate. To do this we need strong climate protection standards.

Our country counts on the EPA to do its job to ensure strong regulation of climate pollution from power plants for our health. Decision-making must come from EPA scientists and experts. The Power Plant Climate Pollution Standards are the result of extensive public engagement, and have strong public support. The American people overwhelmingly support stronger protections against the climate crisis, including standards to cut climate pollution.

Repealing this rule without replacement is dangerous. Do not allow this disgraceful giveaway to the fossil fuel industry—it will be paid for in lives.
